Why you should never post about your car accident on social media

Millions of people post on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram every day. While these websites make for useful tools to stay current on what happens to your friends and family members, the platforms can also work against you in court. Courts today are happy to accept social media posts that both work for and against you, and they can spell devastation in a car accident claim

You may want to inform your loved ones about the collision as soon as possible to let them know you are okay. However, it is best to leave all the details surrounding your case private. You can call or text anyone who definitely has to know about the incident. Otherwise, you risk doing more harm than good.

Accident investigators look through your social media accounts

Insurance companies are for-profit institutions. Their goal is to pay out as little money as possible for your auto accident claim. Therefore, the company will assign an investigator to your case to determine whether you truly deserve compensation. Part of this investigation entails looking through your social media accounts to see whether you posted anything relevant to the case. For example, you may have claimed you suffered an injury, but you posted a picture of yourself working out looking just fine. Even if you actually do have injuries, these pictures can serve as evidence against you.

You should switch your social media settings to private

Many people do not realize how anyone can look up their Facebook and Twitter posts if they have the wrong settings applied. Even if you have security on the highest setting, you still need to remain vigilant. Accident investigators may create fake accounts and send you a friend request so they can see your posts. You also need to be careful of what your friends post about you, which can include tags. It is best to take a break from social media following a car crash.

  • Great Lawyer For A Reasonable Price

Mr. Hulett was a very competent and effective lawyer for me in my custody case. Not only did we get the desired result but he did it for less than half of what my ex paid to her attorney on the same matter.
