New study calls summer months the "100 Deadliest Days" for car accidents involving teenagers

A new study by AAA found that teen drivers are at the highest risk of being involved in a crash between Memorial Day and Labor Day. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety has dubbed this time frame the "100 Deadliest Days," stating that in the last five years 3,500 people died in car accidents involving teen drivers in summer months.

Teen drivers pose a high risk of injury to others on the road

Many of us are familiar with stories of teenage drivers dying or sustaining a serious injury in a car crash. These stories are tragic, especially because in many cases, the accident could have been prevented. However, AAA's study found that inexperienced drivers often pose a greater risk to others than they do to themselves.

According to crash data in the study, nearly two-thirds of the people injured or killed in crashes involving teen drivers were not the teen - but the other driver. The study found that these accidents are especially common during summer months when teens are out of school and driving more often. The three most significant contributing factors in these accidents were speeding, drinking and driving, and distractions.

Distractions put teens and other drivers at risk

Although this most recent study attributed only 9% of accidents during the 100 Deadliest Days to distracted driving, other AAA research flags distractions as one of the most dangerous risks for teen drivers. In the Foundation's most recent Traffic Safety Culture Index, 52% of teenagers reported reading text messages while driving.

According to research by the CDC, a car traveling at 55 mph can cover the length of a football field in the time it takes to read or send a text message.

When negligence or recklessness is the cause of a car accident, those who are injured do not have to recover alone. Talk to the teen drivers in your life about the dangers of distractions on the road, and contact a personal injury attorney following an accident.
