3 Common Sources of Distracted Driving That Can Kill

Every year 1.2 million people die in auto accidents. This tragic figure can be attributed to many things. Inadequate safety features, texting, intoxication, and drowsiness are just a few of the most discussed causes. While alcohol is the most dangerous cause of road accidents, distracted driving also contributes significantly to this somber death toll. Let's look at a few examples of what constitutes the category of distracted drivers.

  1. Semi Truck Accidents
While trucking accidents aren't all related to distractions, many are. When it is your job to drive all day, every day, you increase the mathematical likelihood of getting into an accident. You also increase the likelihood of using your phone out of necessity and falling asleep at the wheel after a long day. Semi truck accidents can be catastrophic due to the truck's weight and inertia. Now, of course not all trucking accidents are caused by the truck driver, but they do operate under very stressful driving conditions.
  2. Texting Related Accidents
As distracted driving goes, texting is among the worst. In order to send a text, you need to literally look away from the road for seconds at a time. Driving circumstances can change in an instant, and if you aren't prepared, a collision is all but inevitable.
  3. Drowsiness Related Accidents
The effects of driving after being awake for over 24 hours are well documented and can produce a reduction in driving capabilities equivalent to someone with a blood alcohol content level of .1, well over the legal limit. That is only considering your level of alertness if you manage to stay awake. Many adults have fallen asleep at the wheel, and the ones that didn't crash will tell you just how terrifying it is. Even though drowsy driving might not be as dangerous as drunk driving, it is certainly not a risk worth taking.

Semi truck accidents are dangerous due to the amount of force from a typical collision. Texting while driving is dangerous because it takes your eyes off the road. Drowsy driving is dangerous since it lowers your reaction time and takes your eyes off the road periodically. Distracted driving, on the whole, is not safe. It can result in injuries, huge insurance spikes, book-length repair and hospital bills, and death. Be safe out there.

Mr. Hulett was a very competent and effective lawyer for me in my custody case. Not only did we get the desired result but he did it for less than half of what my ex paid to her attorney on the same matter.
